Rat race

When I get back from vacation, I always feel the need for another vacation. I'm not going to lie, it's been tough being back. Being on call your first day back to work was tough - was really busy and did not get a lot of sleep. I also had a couple of hospital meetings on Monday night as well.

The goal is to get the work done as much as you can. Unfortunately, other things suffer. I know that I have not been taking care of myself the last few days - not getting enough sleep. That kind of sleep-work then sleep-work cycle again. Not eating right. Not having a chance to relax a little bit (that was supposed to be last week, right?) Definitely have not had a good workout in a few weeks.

This is life in the fast lane. Of course, if one of my patients told me this, I would immediately yell at them for not taking care of themselves and putting themselves at risk for getting physically sick - forget their mental state. I know they're mentally exhausted - as I am right now.

Time to step back and take a break. That's what this blog is for. Glad I have it. Hopefully tomorrow will be better than today. We'll see....

Dr. A! get ya some R&R and then maybe fit in a workout. i find a good viewing of Old School, Bridget Jone's Diary, or Office Space gives me a good dose of laughter and that seems to help.

It sounds like the rats are winning the race. If you want to get even with them, move their cheese.

I'm sorry you're so worn out. Remember, if you ever need anything, your cyber friends are always here.

KT - Thumbs up on office space and BJD. Haven't checked out Old School yet.

How about these "old school" movies: Fletch, Airplane (the first one), and the Naked Gun

I'm a doctor. Please take my advice: Get a pedicure. It will help you relax AND sleep. I also think it might make your work more efficient. That's all. You can reschedule with me in 4-6 weeks.

Dr. Anon ... Fat Doctor may just have the right idea! *LOL*

Seriously though, if you don't pace yourself, you won't be there for your patients ... and you know, my dear, no one can do that for you.

Slow down, rest ... learn to say no. Set aside a special time each day - to do something that you find immensely rewarding, or relaxing, and don't let the day pass without indulging.

I'm thinking of you ... hoping you get to catch up on your rest ...

In addition to fat doctor's fabulous advice, I'd like to add, "Take two aspirin and call me in the morning." Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I enjoyed Fletch, and I really loved Mel Brook's movie
Blazing Saddles.

I agree completely with the need for a vacation after a vacation...I've learned to plan on returning home at least one day BEFORE I actually have to be anywhere or do anything to really unwind. It only took me 25 years of vacationing to figure this out, but I'm happy to share it now. I used to be the queen of hitting the ground running -- and at one point drove from the airport to the hospital to do rounds!

Take the time you need -- take the advice of FD :)

A one-week vacation (which is what I nearly aways did) sucks: couple of days to unwind, one day to enjoy yourself, then increasing dread as the end of the week approaches. Also, we usually raced around trying to fit lots of stuff into the time. The one and only time I came back feeling really rested and re-charged was an atypical laying around on a beach for the whole time. Sand between your toes might interfere with the pedicure, but...

Don't worry, I'll get the pedicure at the right place -- one that advertises that it's "sand resistant."

Another movie I like: Spies Like Us
(may have to google that one -- Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, and Donna Dixon)
"Doctor.. Doctor.. Doctor.. Doctor..
Doctor.. Doctor.. Doctor.. Doctor.."

Oh geez...when I came back from the shore, I worked a 12 hour day...then cried hysterically as soon as I got home from work and promptly called out the next day.

What is it about vacation that leaves us WORSE when we return? Seriously.... I'm almost afraid to go to England now......!

Hang in there!! Hugz...
