Get out and vote!

It's primary election day here in Ohio. If you have been following the news at at all, you know that the US presidential race believes that Ohio is a key state not only today but in November for the general election.

I've already asked some patients this morning and they have told me that they don't vote and will never vote. The reason? Well, they do not want to be called to jury duty. What kind of lame excuse is that? (Jury duty should be from the pool of people with a driver's licence and not registered voters, anyway.) I kind of went off on someone this morning, "Then, you are not allowed to complain how high the cost of health care is. And, you are not allowed to complain about what's going on, because you did not vote."

Now, people tell me that voting doesn't matter anyway. Doesn't matter? There are countries around the world whose only goal is to have a voice in how they are governed. We here in the US are definitely spoiled and don't know how good we have it. So, get out there and vote today! I'm Dr. A, and I approved this message...

You're right, not wanting to be called for jury duty is a lame excuse for not voting. Jury duty is one of our civic responsibilities. I tell people something along the same lines, that if they don't vote, they can't complain when the people we elect do something stupid - and let's face it, they all do something stupid.

Fortunately we have early voting in Texas for the two full weeks prior to the actual election. This election has seen record numbers of people at the polls, including ten times the number of Democrats voting versus the last time, Democrats coming out 3-1 over the Republicans, and a high number of Republican to Democrat converts. If more people get involved and stand up against the nonsense that's gone on for the last 8 years, maybe we can turn things around.

Dr. A,

While I voted a few weeks ago when MA had their primary, I tell people the same thing when they start griping.

First question: Did you vote

If the answer is no, I tell them to be quiet then because they have no right to complain about high taxes, crumbling bridges, no health care/high health care, and the "bone heads" in Washington (or the state capital) because I was taught if you didn't vote, you don't have the right to bitch.

Unfortunately, by the time we have our primaries in May in NC, most of the candidates have dropped out and our voice really isnt worth much until the national election. I do get so tired of the rest of the country making the decision on who will actually run for president without our state having a voice in THAT part of the process.
