Night Without Power

Finally finished with my weekend on call. It's not that it was too, too busy. Just happy to get another weekend on call out of the way. As you can see in the video above, Sunday night was kind of an adventure, because the power went out last night. Now, don't get me wrong, around here, we did not even get the damage that occurred down south from hurricane ike. However, for around here, this is the highest sustained wind gusts that we have had in a while.

Before the power went out at home last night, I was reading some twitters which said that thousands of people on Ohio were without power. And, still this morning, throughout the Buckeye state, many people are still without power, and thoughts that things may not be up and running for as long as seven days - yeesh.

Anyway, when the power was flickering on and off last night - and then subsequently stayed off, what was the first thing that I thought of. That's right - Why not make a video to share with all of my new media friends. And, yes, Kb was right in that this video has the feel of Blair Witch.

On the technology front, I was still checking my twitters via my iPhone even with all electricity and wired internet out - because that's the guy I am - constantly staying connected with all of you - because I care. Emergiblog was even encouraging me to get a battery powered modem (what's up with that? hehe) Anyway, enjoy the video. And, for those of you in Ohio, how's it going? Do you still have power outages and internet interruption? Are you reading this from your iPhone? Let me know!

Our lights started flickering late Saturday night/Sunday morning because of Ike related storms here too. I had decided I would vlog by candlelight if the power went out. You know, just to add a little mood lighting. But, the power didn't go out until late, late and came back on fairly early in the morning.

Luckily you were there to take care of the "power outage vlogging." Good job Dr. A!

I am currently in Cincinnati and we got hit pretty hard with the wind but no rain. They estimated 90% of the people are without electricity. I am sitting on a buddy's boat at the marina with the generator running so we have power and A/C. I've lived through several hurricanes in Florida and I am surprised by how much damage was done here with the winds less than 50 mph although gusts were up to 75 mph.

I'm up here in NE Ohio where there was pretty heavy damage from the wind with trees down in quite a few places. My brother and aunt live directly behind me and they don't have any power and are told they will not have any until at least Friday. I have power, so with a few extention cords I'm using my electric to keep the sump pumps working and provide a little lighting to them. Oh yeah, I told them they had to come up and shower as well because I refused to smell them for a week! Sometimes you need a little "discomfort" to let you understand in a small part how devasting the real thing can be.

In Columbus, I lost power at around 5PM on Sunday and it restarted at 10PM Monday night. I actually ended up sleeping in one of the extra call rooms at the medical center (I live two blocks away).

My family in Ohio just had power restored yesterday and phone today. Ike sure punched a long-range punch!
